Skin Conditions

Eczema and Dermatitis

Eczema and Dermatitis are inflammatory skin problems which can present with an itchy rash, scaling, flaking, weeping and crusty skin scabs. Sometimes, dermatitis or rash is induced by contact with or ingestion of an allergen like soaps, plants certain foods. There are other reasons for dermatitis and these must be dealt with individually. Some underlying issues dealing with eczema may be genetic predisposition, inadequate digestive content i.e. too early introduction of potential allergenic foods, stress, leaky gut syndrome etc.

My treatment may include:

  • Herbs
  • Homotoxicology / homeopathics
  • Dietary changes
  • Vitamin and mineral therapy
  • Liver detoxification

Acne

Acne is another inflammatory skin disorder, common in teenagers but also evident in some adults. Often adults will have overloaded livers which cannot cope with the build up of toxic substances and find that their skin is used by the body as an excretory channel.

Depending on the person, holistic treatments may involve:

  • Hormonal balancing with herbs
  • Lymphatic facial massage - this treatment is very effective for adult onset acne and often resolves itself within a few weeks.
  • Body blood cleansing herbs
  • Essential fatty acids
  • Detoxification of the liver

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is often a hereditary condition and presents as patches of scaly skin, not necessarily itchy, on the legs, knees arms, elbows, scalp (in babies this is known as cradle cap) ears and back. The condition is the too rapid growth of the skin cells. Normal cells will mature and 'fit in' to the skin structure in 28 days. Psoriatic cells take only 8 days and so do not have enough time to mature, leaving excessive amounts of skin spreading over larger areas.

There is much research being done on this condition. Some theories behind it include an auto-immune involvement, another is the poor utilisation of fats, and another is an unhealthy toxic build-up in the colon.

In any medical context - allopathic or complimentary, it is a difficult condition to treat. Light therapy has been used as a maintenance treatment. Holistically though there are a number of avenues to pursue:

  • Herbs are good detoxifiers and blood cleansers - very important in cleaning the body system
  • Essential fatty acids are crucial for proper growth of cells
  • Vitamin and Enzyme Therapy
  • Topical considerations
